{*1} Athena is the daughter of Zeus, supreme god and god of the sky and thunder. When Metis, her mother, was pregnant with her Zeus got a prophecy that she would overrule him. So in order to keep his throne, he swallowed his pregnant wife. About the time Metis should have given birth, Zeus was in terrible pain from a horrible headache. He ordered Hephaestus to split his head to stop the pain, but when he split Zeus' head, out popped a fully grown Athena covered from head to toe in battle gear. While Metis was pregnant with her, technically Zeus is her only parent.

She also was born from Zeus' head, which means that she got even more wisdom from his head. She had a strong liking for battles, although she did enjoy making a precise and detailed battle plan.

Poseidon, to show how much power he obtained, thrust his magical trident into a rock and salt water came spewing out of the hole he made and formed the Erechtheis Sea. Athena went at it in a much better way. She gifted them an olive tree, which was prized all throughout Greece. The cities people decided that Athena should get the city because they loved the tree.

As Teiresias was wandering through the woods, he became very thirsty and happened upon the flowing spring. When he saw Athena naked, he was blinded. According to the Law of Cronus, unless a God wants you to see them, you may not look at them or you shall be punished, which Athena most definetly didn't want to be seen. When Athena realized she could not change what happened, she gifted him things that would make up for it. She gave him the gift of giving prophecies and gave him a staff that would guide his feet so he could still walk.

She helped Odysseus, Hercules, Jason, Cadmus, Perseus, and Bellerophon. Odysseus used her helped when he was slaying suitors who were after his wife, disguising him to help find how bad problem were at home, and also during the Trojan war. Hercules used her help whenever he was in distress. She helped him because Hera had wrongly hurt him and she wanted to fix it. Jason used her help when he was on his quest for the golden fleece. She helped him because Hera enlisted her to. Cadmus used her help when she told him that he needed to plant the teeth from the dragon he had slayed. She helped him because he sacrificed cow to her. Perseus used her help when slaying Medusa. She helped because she hated Medusa and wanted the head for her shield. Bellerophon used her help when she gave him a magic brindle to help tame Pegasus. She helped him because he slept on her alter and made sacrifices to her.
{*7} When Medusa was born, she was a beautiful mortal who had two immortal sisters, together known as the gorgon sisters. She was so gorgeous that Poseidon wanted her. One day, she and Poseidon had sexual relations in Athena's temple in Athens. When Athena found out, she was so outraged that she turned Medusa into an ugly beast. She had snakes for hair and could turn people to stone just by making eye contact. Eventually Perseus had to kill her, and Athena helped him and took her head and put it on her shield.

Both pieces made were perfect, but Arachne's made a mockery of the Gods. Angered by this, Athena ripped her piece to shreds. So upset by displeasing Athena, she committed suicide. In an attempt to save her, Athena turned her into a spider who could weave forever.
{*9} Athena was a virgin Goddess, but she had a son. Hesphaestus, the blacksmith who helped Zeus give birth to her, was very attracted to Athena. He made an attempt to rape her because he was so over come by his attraction. In the process of his attempt, his seed landed on her leg. Disgusted, she wiped it off her leg. When it hit the ground, Erichthonious was born. Athena raised him as her own son until he was old enough to be on her own.
{*10} At the marriage of Peleus and Thetis, Eris threw a golden apple with "for the fairest" written on it at Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. They then argued over who it was meant for. They decided to have a contest judged by Paris, (a Switzerland to say). Athena gave him wisdom, battle help, and fame. Hera gave him control of Asia and Europe Aphrodite gave him the most beautiful mortal to be his wife.He undoubtedly chose Aphrodite as the fairest.
